Have You Tried the Chocolates from Kocoatrait in Chennai that Creates Treats Exclusively from Indian Cacao?

Nitin Chordia is India’s 1st certified cacao and chocolate taster. Poonam Chordia is India’s 1st certified woman chocolate taster. Nitin tells us the story of Kocoatrait.

Kocoatrait is proof that Indian bean-to-bar chocolate can be a benchmark for sustainability and can compete with and win over the best in the world. The aim was to offer the most sustainable chocolate made using Indian cacao without any artificial ingredients and/or any compromised fat. At Kocoatrait we believe that we are in the fat/sugar processing business. The final product ends up being chocolate. We aim to offer each product extremely differentiated and on the merit of each ingredient used. For example, we do not have a Fruits & Nuts or a hazelnut or an orange or mint flavour. But we do have 4 varieties of coffee-flavoured chocolates using high-quality coffee beans directly.

Our chocolate experience starts from our shipping boxes (which are reusable), upcycled and recyclable wrappers made using reclaimed cotton and cocoa husk, and printing is done by differently-abled citizens using water-based ink. With our Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Wrapper Return Program, we aim to provide a planet and ingredient-friendly, sustainable, plastic-free, delicious AND artificial flavour-free single-origin bean-to-bar chocolate experience made using Indian cacao for conscious consumers. Flavours and ingredients that are local, unique and pair well with the cocoa that we employ, are the focus. Our Madras Collection is a great example of how unique local flavours can be blended into chocolate

Ours is an all-women team (except me – I am NOT involved with the day-to-day production) and they are employed only from the local community. None of them was qualified in chocolate making. We train them from the ground up. We employ 3 full-time women paying fair wages and work 6 days a week with no overtime expected from the team.
